I was a little stumped when trying to decide how to decorate Sophia's birthday cake. I am not a crafty, cake-decorating genius. Honestly, we don't even have cake pans right now. The nonstick coating was peeling off so I got rid of them and have yet to pick up more. I made the cake in a pyrex storage container (without the lid of course). I stared at the lumpy chocolate cake and the frosting tin and tried to think of something that was even a little creative.
Then inspiration struck! I washed a few of Sophia's princes toys and -- presto! -- a pretty good looking cake. Priding myself on my creativity, ingenuity, and ability to use pre-existing household items, I imagined Sophia's reaction. I could picture a big smile, pleas to eat the cake immediately, and frenzied jumping up and down because there were princesses on the cake.
When I eagerly revealed the cake, Sophia burst into tears and wailed, "I want my crown! I want my princess dolls!"
She was so upset. I was stifling laughter as I gathered up my sobbing birthday girl in my arms and rocked her. But . . . did I give her the crown or the dolls back? Nope. Not then. I made her wait the rest of that day until after dinner when we actually had the cake with a few friends.
