Sophia the Soccer Shark

We were excited to enroll Sophia in our neighborhood soccer league. She's in the micro division for 3-5 year olds. It's kind of a big thing in our area.  There are over 300 3-5 year olds in the league playing soccer.  They have practice once a week and a 45-minute game every Saturday.  It's a non-competative league. There are no goalies and five kids (out of a team of ten) are on the field.

Her team voted and picked the sharks for their name.  This name and the tigers are the two most popular in the league.  My favorite team name that we've seen so far is the Blue Hamsters. Sophia's the youngest on her team and seems to prefer pulling up grass and dancing on the field to fighting for the ball in a giant clump of kids who are wearing real cleats.

This is the only day she wore her full uniform: picture day.  This weekend Jake was up in San Francisco for a bachelor party and she had an 8:00 am Saturday morning game and an 8:00 am picture time on Sunday.  I was tried really hard not to be  bitter to have these two early mornings with both kids by myself!

Sophia wears dresses and ballet skirts (and whatever else she picks because I believe in picking my battles) to practice.  She does not like black and blue, but she has to wear the shirt for games.  Usually she wears her pink soccer socks.

She has really nice, encouraging coaches.  When she comes off the field for a water break, she sometimes doesn't want to go back out.  We've been encouraging her with time at the park after practice or the game if she listens to her coach and stays on the field.

Ben thinks he's a big kid and tries to run on the field and kick the ball at practice and games.  I think he likes soccer more than Sophia.  We'll see if she decides to play again next year. . .

I wondered why we had such a fancy banner (made by our team mom) but they put it behind our goal so the kids know where to shoot the ball.
